Albert Y. Wong is a painter, an illustrator and a graphic designer. He grew up in Hong Kong. He received his degree from the Columbus College of Art and Design and his graduate degree from Kent State University. As a painter, he is noted for his works in the trompe l'oeil or "deceive the eye" tradition that depicts common everyday objects, with which he creates optical illusion of depth. He paints the objects with such verisimilitude on canvas or paper as to deceive the viewer concerning the material reality of the object. The viewer is often amused or confused as they focus on the spatial illusion before seeking meaning behind the image. His recent work often employs ephemeral layers of Chinese characters, a reflection of an artist of Chinese American background uniting elements of heritage with his life experiences. He works primarily in the media of watercolor or oil. He has had a number of solo exhibitions in galleries and museums in New York, Texas, Illinois, Alabama, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Nanjing, China. |
His work is in private and corporate collections in the U.S., Canada, Australia and China including the Chase Manhattan Bank, Coca-Cola, KFC, Tennessee Valley Authority, University of Kentucky, Rutgers University, Spencer Museum of Art (KS) and Akron Art Museum (OH). His work has been exhibited at the Butler Institute of American Art, San Diego Art Institute, Picker Art Gallery (NY), Illinois State Museum, Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Paintings (China), Museo de Arte (Mexico) and the Hong Kong Art Centre. Most recently his work has appeared in the Pence Gallery in Davis, Crocker Museum in Sacramento, California. He was a graphic designer in Ohio in his early career. He taught at Lincoln College and Western Kentucky University prior to joining the Art Faculty at the University of Texas, where he taught graphic design and illustration from 1986 to 2017. He now lives and maintains his studio in Vallejo, California. |
